LOCKS

When you need towing security that goes above and beyond the normal call of duty, CURT locks rise to the challenge. Our hitch locks are available in deadbolt and barbell styles and come with watertight dust caps to prevent corrosion. CURT hitch locks are essential for maximizing the protection of your ball mount and trailer. They operate with easy 1/4-turn activation and come with two keys. As much as you may love towing around that big, shiny boat or pair of snowmobiles, you cannot always be there to stand guard. At some point in your towing adventure, your vehicle and trailer will probably need to be left unattended for a period of time – at the gas station, campsite, boat landing, wherever it might be. Curt Sway Control

Sway Control

Trailer sway, like any problem, can start small, but if it is not quickly managed, it can turn into a disaster. A trailer can begin to sway back and forth for various reasons, whether it is pushed by the wind or if the trailer’s weight is not properly accommodated for with the right towing equipment. Whatever the case, trailer sway need not be threat to your driving.

Though a weight distribution hitch is not an ideal solution for trailer sway on its own, CURT weight distribution hitches are made to be combined with a sway control unit and many are available with a sway control included for a complete package. CURT also carries ball mounts that are specially designed to work with a sway control kit, having a sway tab welded right onto the ball mount platform.

We recommend using a sway control any time you are towing a heavier load. While one sway control kit can be sufficient to help correct the problem, two units are recommended for maximum control and stability. CURT also carries a number of sway control replacement parts and accessories to make sure your needs are met. It does not take much – a strong breeze, a passing semi truck or even excessive tongue weight – to start your trailer swaying. Stop sway in its tracks and make your towing ride as smooth as possible with CURT sway control.

A sway control unit is an inexpensive solution to the problem of a wandering trailer. CURT sway control kits are designed to attach to your vehicle and trailer at the coupling point and counteract any lateral movement in your trailer, keeping your tow load straighter on the road and giving you more control over your vehicle. The sway bar uses a material like that used in brake pads to provide the necessary resistance while still allowing your vehicle to complete proper turns with your trailer attached. The sway control mounts onto the frame of your trailer and connects to the vehicle’s ball mount using a separate trailer ball. CURT sway controls are adjustable and easy to install. They come with a sway bar, a trailer-mounted attachment ball, a hitch-mounted attachment ball, a weld-on tab, a mount reinforcement plate and attachment clips.

Curt Weight Distribution

Weight Distribution

CURT weight distribution hitches, or load-equalizing hitches, are designed to create a level ride across your tow vehicle and trailer. This is done by equalizing or distributing the tongue weight of the trailer more evenly onto the vehicle’s axles. CURT weight distribution hitches use metal spring bars to pry or lift up on the back end of the vehicle and move more of the trailer’s tongue weight to the front axle. While a tow vehicle’s back end might sit several inches lower with a heavy trailer, with a weight distribution hitch properly installed, this height difference is reduced and split across the entire vehicle.

CURT weight-distributing hitches come in two styles: round bar and trunnion bar. These refer to the types of spring bars used by each style. A round bar weight distribution hitch uses round spring bars attached to the underside of the WD hitch head, and a trunnion bar weight distribution hitch uses square bars mounted at the face of the hitch head. There is a small difference between the round bar and trunnion bar in weight capacity – round bar hitches are available with a gross trailer weight capacity up to 14,000 lbs. and trunnion bar up to 15,000 lbs. – but generally, they are fairly similar. Some do prefer one or the other for their differences in installation.

CURT weight distribution hitches feature heavy-duty hitch heads and forged steel spring bars; both of which are highly adjustable to achieve the exact weight distribution necessary. Our WD hitches come with 2” x 2” shanks to fit receiver-style trailer hitches of classes 3, 4 and 5 as well as RV hitches and some bumper hitches. A weight distribution hitch cannot be used on trailer hitches of classes 1 or 2 because of their relatively low gross trailer weight capacity. If a weight distribution hitch were to be applied to a trailer with too little weight, the trailer would become too “stiff” for proper towing. Before purchasing a CURT weight distribution hitch, check to make sure your trailer hitch is compatible.

Sway Control

While weight distribution hitches are an effective solution for stabilizing and leveling out your towing rig, they can also be used, when coupled with the proper accessories, to prevent dangerous sway in your trailer. A CURT weight distribution hitch on its own should not be considered a sway control. However, when combined with a CURT sway control kit, the WD hitch maximizes its effectiveness in controlling sway. A CURT sway control bar and trailer ball can easily be attached using the provided sway control tab built into our weight distribution hitches, and certain models are available as a complete package, having a sway control unit included with the hitch.
